Teaching - Medical Education Unit - Hero

Teaching

There are two sites in which our weekly academic meetings take place. These are at Highbury Hospital and Sherwood Oaks Hospital.

Presentations are done by foundation, GP and core resident doctors and chaired by higher specialist resident doctors and consultants. It is expected that all resident doctors and consultants attend.

Resident doctors of all levels can expect to receive an hour of individual supervision a week, this is protected time.

Medical Education's teaching offer is split between the following.

Medical students

Visit the Medical Students page for more information.

GP and Foundation training

Each month a teaching session takes place designed specifically for GP and Foundation resident doctors to further develop their understanding of psychiatry.

Foundation doctors will also attend two mental health simulation sessions.

Core training

During Weekly academic meetings, GP, Foundation and Core resident doctors are rostered to present a case or research paper.

Regional MRCPsych teaching also takes place. These are full day sessions and are attended by resident doctors in core training from across the East Midlands. The sessions cover topics which are part of the exam curriculum.

CT residents will also attend simulation sessions in smaller teaching groups allowing for depth of reflection and consideration of your own practice, as well as building a skill set around 'difficult conversations'.

Additionally, there is also a case based discussion group lead by a CAMHS consultant.

There are opportunities to deliver Medical Education teaching to medical students, GP and Foundation resident doctors as well as facilitating simulation.

Higher training

For resident doctors in Higher training there is a monthly speciality teaching programme, owned and run by the HST's, with consultant support. These sessions provide an opportunity for HST doctors to learn together, continuing professional development, facilitate peer group discussion and support.

The schedule incorporates a representative meeting where resident doctors are offered a safe space to discuss training issues. Higher trainees also chair and attend the weekly academic programme.

Resident doctors in Higher training also have the opportunity to teach on the MRCPsych Teaching Programme.
