Mental Health Services for Older People

Mental Health Services for Older People Nottinghamshire Healthcare is a major provider of specialist mental health services for older people in Nottingham City and the wider county. The service caters to the needs of all people suffering from dementia, regardless of age and those presenting with severe and enduring mental health illnesses, such as depression. 

Services are provided in an in-patient and community basis and comprise of the following teams: 

In-patient services - There are 90 assessment and treatment beds, the beds are provided at Millbrook Mental Health Unit, Bassetlaw Hospital and Highbury Hospital.

The MHSOP Directorate upholds the principle of person-centred care in all of its services and supports staff to provide dignified and respectful care that meets assessed individual needs, supports choice and enhances wellbeing. All services provide a multidisciplinary team approach, including Nursing, Medical, Psychology, Allied Health Care Professionals and Admin.

Inpatient wards

Silver Birch is a 20 bedded unit for older people with a diagnosis of Dementia and challenging behaviour. The Covid Care unit is temporarily on Silver Birch ward for the care of patients tested positive or symptomatic of Covid-19. 

Cherry ward is a 20 bedded mixed assessment ward for older adults, 65 years and over who have functional mental health problems.

Ward B1 is a 15 bedded unit consisting of 10 organic assessment and treatment beds and 5 functional beds.

Kingsley Ward is a 20 bedded assessment unit for people over the age of 65 who suffer from functional mental health problems.

Amber Ward is a 15 bedded ward for the assessment of people over the age of 65 suffering from dementia.

Community Mental Health Locations

Community Mental Health Team, based at Mansfield & Ashfield, (Portland Street) Newark & Sherwood (Bryon House), Bassetlaw Hospital, Gedling & Hucknall (Hazelwood House), Broxtowe (Shelia Gibson Unit), Rushcliffe, (Lings Bar Hospital) City Teams (The Coppice) 

Services are for people over the age of 65 with functional mental health difficulties and for people of any age with organic mental health difficulties. Services are provided within the local community by a range of multi-disciplinary staff including community psychiatric nursing, consultant psychiatrist, psychology, occupational therapy, speech & language therapy and physiotherapy. 

Intensive Home Treatment Team

A specialist multi-disciplinary service working with older persons over the age of 65 with a functional mental health problem and people of any age with a diagnosis of dementia. It offers a maximum of 12 week assessment and support package to people in their own homes with moderate to severe mental health problems. It aims to prevent avoidable admissions to hospital, short or long-term care and to help facilitate early discharge from hospital.

County Dementia Outreach

County wide service integrated into community mental health teams. Provides skilled, specialist staff to support older people with dementia and their carers in residential or nursing homes during times of crisis or difficulty.

Day Units based at Parkside Lings Bar Hospital, Broxtowe

Parkside is part of the day services south group within MHSOP and provides a range of time limited interventions including: Cognitive Stimulation Therapy, Maintenance CST, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for mild to moderate depression and anxiety, and Recovery Model focused group.

Broxtowe Day Unit is part of day services south and is based at the Sheila Gibson Unit, Stapleford Care Centre. The service also facilitates once weekly outreach to Eastwood Volunteer Bureau. It provides a range of time limited interventions including: Cognitive Stimulation Therapy and Maintenance CST.

Liaison Psychiatry

Liaison Psychiatry is a newly developed service based primarily on 2 acute hospital sites in Nottinghamshire – namely Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham and Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield. The service however also provides specialist input at Nottingham City Hospital, Mansfield Community Hospital and Newark Hospital.

Liaison Psychiatry is an overarching service comprising of 3 highly specialist clinical specialisms: Mental Health Services for Older People: Adult Mental Health and Substance Misuse.

The aim of the service is to work closely with acute providers of care to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to hospital, positively impact on reduced lengths of stay for those who are admitted and to improve health outcomes of individual patients as a result of timely assessments and interventions by highly skilled practitioners.

Dementia Diagnostic Services

The Memory Assessment Service (MAS) at Heather House Kirby in Ashfield, The Coppice for City Team and Gedling & Hucknall, Bassetlaw Hospital, Bryon House Newark, Shelia Gibson Unit Broxtowe, and Lings Bar Hospital Rushcliffe. This is a nurse led service working in collaboration with Consultant Psychiatrists and the wider Community Mental Health Team.

The overall aim of the Memory Assessment Service is to improve access to specialist memory assessment services and to provide timely and person centred specialist assessment and diagnosis. The service will provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, appropriate treatment, active therapy and the opportunity for an individually tailored care plan both pre and post-diagnosis. It will provide flexible, creative, client centred approach to enable the person with cognitive difficulties to engage in services.

Working Age Dementia

Referrals for Working Age Dementia diagnostic services for the whole of Nottinghamshire based at the Management Suite Kirby in Ashfield.

Speech and Language Therapy Services

Based at Lings Bar Hospital, Highbury Hospital, Heather House, Bryon House.
