‘No Excuse For Abuse’ – as a Trust we stand up against hate incidents and abuse

This weekend sees the start of National Hate Crime Awareness Week (12 to 19 October) and Nottinghamshire Healthcare is sending out a clear message to those who abuse its colleagues, visitors, carers and service users that there is no place for hate as its ‘No Excuse for Abuse’ hate incident/crime campaign is launched for the third year.

A hate incident is any incident which the victim, or anyone else, believes is based on someone’s hostility or prejudice towards them because of their gender, mental health, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, age, disability or gender identity whether real or perceived.

Diane Hull, Executive Director of Nursing, AHPs and Quality/Executive Champion for Hate Incidents, said:

“Any form of abuse, harassment or violence is unacceptable, and we need to do everything we can to address it when it happens. We are committed to ensuring that all our colleagues feel supported if they experience a hate incident or hate crime and are able to report it if they see it happening.

“We are united in our belief that we will not tolerate any form of abuse, harassment or violence against colleagues, visitors, carers, and those who use or services, whether verbal, threatening or physical.

“Remarks or behaviour based on someone’s gender, mental health, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, age, disability or gender identity will not be tolerated.”

You can watch Diane Hull talk about the importance of our ‘No Excuse for Abuse’ campaign in this short film:

See, Report, Support

Our campaign also focuses on encouraging colleagues, patients, visitors and carers to See’ Report’ ‘Support’ and to speak up and report any hate incidents if they see it happening and for colleagues to support those who experience it.

If you have seen or been a victim of hate incident or hate crime you are encouraged to report incidents to your local police force by calling 101 or dialling 999 in an emergency.

Support our campaign

As part of our commitment to addressing all forms of hate incidents, to encourage those who experience it to come forward and for those who see it to report it, we will be sharing messages on our social media channels about why hate crime/hate incidents should not be tolerated.  Please reshare if you are able to.

You can see some of these messages on our dedicated hate crime area on the Trust’s website - www.nottinghamshirehealthcare.nhs.uk/hate-incidents-crimes
